TLIC4006 – Drive multi-combination vehicle

Description

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to drive a multi-combination vehicle safely, including systematic and efficient control of all vehicle functions, coupling and uncoupling of dollies, monitoring of traffic and road conditions, management of vehicle condition and performance, and effective management of hazardous situations.

Course Length

HR to MC Course – 2 days and costs $2200.00 with a deposit of $350.00.

HC to MC Course – 1 day and costs $1200.00 with a deposit of $350.00.

Additional hours are charged at $150.00/hr if the driver is deemed not competent within the specified time period.

Upgrading to an MC licence

If you hold a HR or HC open licence (ie you got your HR or HC in a crash-box), you do not have to do your MC in a crash-box to get an open MC licence.

If you only hold a HR or HC synchromesh licence (ie B restriction) meaning you have never been assessed in a crash box at HR or HC level, then if you do the MC in a synchromesh gearbox, you will get an MC licence with a B restriction. If you want an open MC you will have to be assessed (and trained if necessary) in a crash box. WATTO TRAINING can provide this training but it is an additional cost. The rate is $110/hour and the number of hours required varies depending on the student’s experience, skills and abilities.

How is the Course Structured?

There are three components:

Part 1: Theory Questions

Answer 100 theory questions. These are True / False and Multiple-Choice.

The theory will cover:

  • Relevant road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements of the relevant state/territory road traffic authority
  • Relevant OH&S and environmental procedures and regulations
  • Multi-combination vehicle controls, instruments and indicators and their use
  • Multi-combination vehicle handling procedures
  • Workplace driving and operational instructions
  • Engine power management and safe driving strategies
  • Efficient driving techniques
  • Pre-operational checks carried out on multi-combination vehicle and related action
  • Differences between transmission types
  • Principles of operation of air brakes and procedures for their use
  • Driving hazards and related defensive driving techniques
  • Map reading and road navigation techniques
  • Factors which may cause traffic delays and diversions and related action that can be taken by a driver
  • Principles of stress management when driving a vehicle
  • Causes and effects of fatigue on drivers
  • Factors which increase fatigue-related accidents
  • Fatigue management strategies including on-road techniques
  • Lifestyles which promote the effective long-term management of fatigue

Part 2: Oral Questions

These are verbal questions that the trainer will ask you during your practical assessment.

Part 3: Practical Driving Assessment

The Practical Assessment will cover:

  • Qld Traffic Act and Regulations
  • Pre-start vehicle inspections
  • Safety checks/cabin drills
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Driver attitudes and behaviours
  • Route navigation
  • On road driving
  • Coupling/uncoupling dollies/trailers
  • Reversing Techniques
  • Fatigue Management
  • Communicate effectively with others when driving a multi-combination vehicle
  • Read and interpret instructions, procedures, information and signs relevant to the driving of a multi-combination vehicle
  • Interpret and follow operational instructions and prioritise work
  • Complete documentation related to the driving of a multi-combination vehicle
  • Operate electronic communication equipment to required protocol
  • Work collaboratively with others when driving a multi-combination vehicle
  • Adapt appropriately to cultural differences in the workplace, including modes of behaviour and interactions with others
  • Promptly report and/or rectify any identified problems, faults or malfunctions that may occur when driving a multi-combination vehicle in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
  • Implement contingency plans for unexpected events when driving a multi-combination vehicle
  • Apply precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate hazards that may exist during the driving of a multi-combination vehicle
  • Monitor and anticipate traffic hazards and take appropriate action
  • Modify activities depending on differing operational contingencies, risk situations and environments
  • Apply fatigue management knowledge and techniques
  • Work systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment
  • Operate and adapt to differences in equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Select and use required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and OH&S standards
  • Monitor performance of vehicle, its trailers and its equipment and take appropriate action where required
  • Service vehicle and its equipment in terms of maintenance schedule and standard operating procedures
  • Check and replenish fluids and carry out lubrication processes in the course of work activities

Skills Required to Participate in this Course

Applicants must be able to perform the following to be eligible for this course:

  • Read and interpret relevant regulations, instructions, manuals, notices and signs applicable to their role of driving operations within the road transport industry
  • Speak clearly and directly on matters related to driving operations within the road transport industry
  • Complete documents as part of duties, including completion of relevant forms
  • Identify and solve or report problems arising during the job role of driving operations within the road transport industry
  • Recognise problems that may occur in the within the job role of driving operations within the road transport industry and take appropriate action to report or resolve the problems within limits of responsibility
  • Recognise hazards and risks in a range of driving operation situations within the road transport industry.
  • Respond appropriately to any changes in equipment, standard operating procedures and the working environment.
  • Follow and apply operational and emergency plans, systems and procedures
  • Comply with applicable road safety regulations and codes of practice
  • Collect and interpret information needed during driving operations within the road transport industry within limits of responsibility
  • Follow and apply the applicable safe working requirements and WHS/OHS procedures during driving operations within the road transport industry

Eligibility to Drive a Multi-Combination Vehicle (B-Double)

The following table sets out the period you are required to hold a particular class of licence before you are eligible to progress to the next higher class of licence. This period may be a single continuous period or made up of a number of individual periods. Any time your licence is suspended or expired cannot be included when calculating this period.

All B-Double licencing is conducted onsite. Students must provide a B-Double truck for training delivery and assessment. Please contact us to organise a site visit at your convenience.

Cancellations

A student who wishes to cancel their enrolment must give notice in writing. This may be via email or letter. Watto Training staff who are approached with the initial notice of cancellation are to ensure the student understands their rights with regards to the refunding of tuition fees. The student is also to be advised of other options such as suspending the enrolment and re-commencing in another scheduled training program.

Students who give written notice to cancel their enrolment and who are eligible for a refund are to be provided with a Refund Request Form. A student who may not be eligible but is requesting a refund should also be provided with the request form so the request can be properly considered by the Chief Executive Officer.

Refunds

The following refund policy will apply:

Students who give notice to cancel their enrolment more than 10 days prior to the commencement of a program will be entitled to a full refund of fees paid.

Students who give notice to cancel their enrolment less than 10 days prior to the commencement of a program will be entitled to a 75% refund of fees paid. The amount retained (25%) by Watto Training is required to cover the costs of staff and resources which will have already been committed based on the student’s initial intention to undertake the training.

Students who cancel their enrolment after a training program has commenced will not be entitled to a refund of fees.

Discretion may be exercised by the Chief Executive Officer in all situations if the student can demonstrate that extenuating or significant personal circumstance led to their withdrawal. In these cases, the student may be offered a full credit toward the tuition fee in another scheduled program in lieu of a refund. Chief Executive Officer may also authorise a refund of tuition fees if the circumstances require it.

Where refunds are approved, the refund payment must be paid to the student within 14 days from the time the student gave written notice to cancel their enrolment. Tuition refunds are to be paid via electronic funds transfer using the authorised bank account nominated by the student on the Refund Request Form.

Our Guarantee to Clients

If for any reason Watto Training is unable to fulfil its service agreement with a student, Watto Training must issue a full refund for any services not provided. The basis for determining “services not provided” is to be based on the units of competency completed by the student and which can be issued in a statement of attainment at the time the service is terminated.
