Training And Assessment Process

Q: What is this unit about?

TLIC1051 – Operate Commercial Vehicle is a foundational unit that focuses on the safe, efficient, and responsible operation of a commercial vehicle in real workplace conditions.

The unit develops the skills and knowledge required to operate a commercial vehicle while managing road and traffic conditions, maintaining vehicle performance, and responding effectively to hazards and emergencies. It emphasises low-risk driving behaviours, engine and transmission care, eco-driving principles, fatigue and stress management, and compliance with workplace procedures and road laws.

Applicants are required to conduct pre-operational checks, monitor vehicle condition during operation, use vehicle controls and associated equipment correctly, and complete required documentation. The unit also covers route planning, anticipating traffic conditions, and positioning vehicles safely for loading and unloading.

Assessment must occur in a workplace or realistic simulated environment (not solely online or via a simulator) and requires demonstration of practical driving competence, hazard management, application of legislation, and effective communication and record-keeping. A provisional car licence is required before commencing the unit, and all driving must comply with relevant state or territory licensing and regulatory requirements.

TLIC1051 – Operate Commercial Vehicle prepares applicants to safely operate a commercial vehicle with a clear duty of care to themselves and others, meeting both industry and regulatory expectations.
